On 23rd May 2013 a delegation of faculty from Richmond University, Virginia visited JAC. The delegation heard from Prof. Itzchak Weismann, head of JAC, about the political situation in Israel in the wake of the recent elections and about its implications on Jewish-Arab relations in the country. In the following discussion the members asked about the place of the Arab minority in the university and the institutions’ policy toward promoting Arab faculty and student programs. Prof. Weismann stressed the need to balance between the promotion of minorities and the requirements of free competition and excellence.
Background about the program
Jewish and Arab students meet on a roundtable and discuses issues related to students life in the campus.
The first meeting was held on April 30. Participants,students all study in the department of political science in Haifa University, discussed the political activity and freedom of speech in the campus and came up with several recommendation from the meeting:
1. The project should be made open to all students in campus.
2. Meetings should include more female students because they were underrepresented this meeting.
3. All political groups in the university should arrange a meeting with the president and try to define a scope for political activites in the campus which will allow more freedom of speech in order to enable discussion bewteen different groups, Jewish and Arab alike.
The first meeting of the Students Meet program took place on April 29. This mini-seminar has been organized by the student cells Ofek and Hadash under the auspices of JAC and is open to all students in the university. At the first meeting Prof. Itzchak Weismann, head of JAC discussed with the students the meaning of coexistence and related concepts such as shared life and shared spaces. The students referred to the need for more shared activities of Jews and Arabs in the university and in Israel at large.
